Reality show
"STEP TV" debuts
on iMedia Network
Dallas iMedia's new reality show, "STEP TV," (Student Television Empowerment Process) tracks 10 junior high students as they follow Stedman Graham's "Nine Steps for Success" as presented at the "S3 = Student Success Summit" held September 13. Students were asked to find their passion and develop a plan to achieve their goals.
Among the students that "STEP TV" will follow during the school year are Khalil Coffield, a 13 year-old student that attends Comstock Middle School and lives with his three siblings and their grandmother in South Dallas. Khalil says he wants to become a better public speaker and to one day be elected president of the United States. "STEP TV" will also follow Rachel Dupard, a talented 13 year old student who was deaf and speech impaired until age 3 when surgery allowed her to hear and learn to speak. Rachel debuted on the national scene last year in several competitions on the network program "America's Got Talent" and hopes to grow her singing and acting career.
"This is a great way to follow up on the motivational workshop given by Stedman Graham," said Lisa Hembry, Dallas iMedia CEO. "And hopefully both youth and adult viewers will be inspired by the steps these children take to reach their goals."
The "STEP TV" program will be cablecast on Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons at 5:00 p.m. on iMedia Youth Channel 96 running through the end of the academic year. Regularly scheduled cablecasts of Stedman Graham's "Nine Steps to Success" workshop along with comments from ESPN's Nancy Lieberman and other motivational speakers from "S3 = Student Success Summit" will also be shown on Dallas iMedia Network.
City Council announces 2008-2009
funding level for iMedia
Many thanks to the Dallas City Council for their vote of confidence by their approval to fund Dallas iMedia Network's contract to provide public access television services for $246,000 in the 2008-2009 budget year. The reduced funding does mean we will work harder to develop earned income, and our members are encouraged to show their gratitude to council members. iMedia board and staff members will continue delivery of the valuable communications resources and programming the community enjoys, while working to secure additional resources and clients. Thanks to iMedia members and supporters for your phone calls, emails and town hall meeting appearances to speak on behalf of Dallas iMedia. Public access television does serve an important role in Dallas--giving citizens a voice, and connecting citizens to information, arts and entertainment through local programming. We will continue to advocate the value of public access television services.
Yes, We Will! Save Community Television in Dallas.
Every great city in America, "land of the free and home of the brave," supports public access to cable television channels. As a model urban city, Dallas should be no different.
Once again, I am personally asking you for your immediate action to SAVE community television. The time is NOW, the situation is CRITICAL.
The Dallas City Council is working through the proposed 2009 city budget, and Dallas iMedia Network (formerly DCTV) has been reduced to $196,000 dollars.
Unless iMedia's budget is restored, our voice will be silenced...and the attack on our free speech will continue to accelerate.
Here is a snapshot of how the city has deteriorated iMedia's contract value over the last several years:
-
2001 - 2005: $700,000
-
2006: $543,000
-
2007: $508,000
-
2008: $300,000
-
This drastic funding reduction may well end public access television in Dallas.
iMedia funding must be restored to the bare minimum 2008 level of $300,000.
City Council Members are holding Town Hall Meetings in your neighborhood to listen to citizen concerns. This is an emergency.
Please attend and SPEAK. Ask for funding to be reinstated to at least $300,000 for public access television in our community. See the Town Hall Meeting list.
Also, mark your calendar to attend the final budget hearings and vote, in Council Chambers, on the following Wednesdays:
- August 27
- September 10
- September 24
Public access television helps local government fulfill its societal obligations. The members of the Dallas City Council need to know YOU and hear YOU say public access television matters in our city!
Call 214.670.3738 at least 24 hours in advance to register to speak at the three City Council meetings listed above. In addition, it is vital that you call, or email Mayor Leppert and all city council representatives.
THE TIME IS NOW, THE SITUATION IS CRITICAL! THE MAYOR AND DALLAS CITY COUNCIL MUST HEAR YOUR VOICE. DALLAS IMEDIA NETWORK MATTERS TO OUR CITY!
YES, WE WILL! Save community television in Dallas. Call me to let me know that I can count on you.
Thank you for your help,
Lisa Hembry

Arts Magnet Film and Video Club Join Dallas iMedia
30 members of the Booker T. Washington Arts Magnet Film and Video Club joined Dallas iMedia youth member ranks this month. The students had an exciting round table discussion about what programs they would like to work on individually and as groups. The majority of the subjects stayed within the realm of public service/informative videos. Substance abuse, teen pregnancy and self-mutilation or “cutting” themes dominated the list. Other students were interested in the entertainment aspect of video production.
After a tour of the facilities, the Booker T. kids gathered in the studio for a quick lesson on directing, camera operation and set design before diving into an impromptu talk show. The group hit the ground running and did a fantastic job. The topic of the first show was “What is it like Going to Booker T.” The host and guest found it to be a topic of unlimited conversation and opened it up to questions from the studio audience. The audience, made up of members of the film club, shot back with questions about admissions, cluster groups and the school’s effects on student’s futures.
The group then rotated positions to give everyone a chance to do the different jobs involved in studio production. The second show was titled “Is Brittany Spears a Good Parent.” The conclusion was a resounding “No.” Ms. J., the groups sponsor, said that the group had a great time and are very excited about the partnership with iMedia. The kids wasted no time and have set up the first studio shoot date for a 30-minute, bi-weekly program about the activities at Booker T. Washington Arts Magnet.

Youth Channel to Premiere ... continued
Dallas iMedia Network, the public access television system and interactive voice for the Greater Dallas community, introduces The Youth Channel featuring original and innovative content produced by and about local youth.
"This initiative responds to an overabundance of violent and profane commercial television programming aimed at the youth market," said iMedia President/CEO Lisa Hembry.
The agency will launch its Youth Channel on Thursday, October 4th at 6:00 a.m. on iMedia channel 15B, or 96 in neighborhoods converted to the new digital cable television line-up. Dallas iMedia channels are available on Time Warner Cable in the city of Dallas. Programming will stream simultaneously on www.dallasimedia.net.
In support of the project, Hembry today announced a major grant from the Harold Simmons Foundation and significant involvement of the Junior League of Dallas. "The support of two of Dallas' most prestigious and generous philanthropic organizations is our dream come true," said Hembry. "We are most grateful for their vote of confidence in our vision."
The Harold Simmons Foundation of Dallas provided a generous two-year grant to support iMediaYouth Channel and the Young Producers. The $100,000 gift allows iMedia to expand its capacity to develop literate youth who are able to read, analyze, evaluate, and produce media for diverse audiences.
The Junior League of Dallas will host The Youth Channel launch party Thursday, October 4th from 5:30 until 8:00 p.m. at the Dallas iMedia Network studio located at the Central Dallas Public Library. Fort Worth based CRM Studios will demonstrate Academy AwardŽ winn |
